Pilgrimage to the Hill of Crosses, Lithuania

In July members of RCST undertook a weekend pilgrimage to the Hill of Crosses near Šiauliai, Lithuania — one of the most remarkable Christian pilgrimage sites in Europe. For more than 150 years, people have placed crosses on this hill as symbols of faith, hope, remembrance, and resilience. During the Soviet occupation, the crosses were repeatedly destroyed by the authorities, yet local people continued to rebuild the site, making it a powerful symbol of peaceful resistance and spiritual freedom. Today, the Hill of Crosses attracts pilgrims and visitors from around the world seeking prayer, reflection, and inspiration.

As part of our pilgrimage, we placed a cross on the hill on behalf of RCST. It stands as our prayer and commitment for peace, compassion, and relief for all who suffer because of war, injustice, illness, poverty, or other hardships. Together we offered prayers in Portuguese, English, Estonian, and Russian, expressing our shared hope that people of different nations and languages can unite in faith, solidarity, and mutual understanding.

The pilgrimage was not only a journey across the Baltic countries but also a meaningful spiritual experience that reminded us of the enduring power of hope, prayer, and the human spirit.
